4.79 Ha holdings in Bricco delle Viole vineyard, planted in 1949, Barolo. A very special single vineyard with perfect exposure, planted in 1949. In the early spring this vineyard is first filled with small violets (viole) showing its exceptional exposure. Soils are Tortonian calcareous marl, very poor, with a high percentage of limestone. The ridge (Bricco) is exposed and sits at 470 meters. The vineyard holds very little heat and the poor soils slow down the ripening to allow for harvest dates 10 to 14 days later than in more protected sites in Barolo. Fermentation on the skins at free temperature for 30 to 40 days, aged slowly in 25 and 50 HI Slavonian cask for 42 months. One of the greatest expressions of Barolo elegance and finesse. Production: 12,000 bottles.
Graphite and iron aromas lead off, with cherry, floral, licorice, tea and underbrush flavors. This is intense, vibrant and resonant on the long, fruit- and mineral-infused aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2032. 1,500 cases made.
Aromas of dark berry, violet, mint and menthol lead the nose and carry over to the palate together with juicy cherry and a note of baking spice. This is still tightly wound with densely packed but refined tannins and brisk acidity. Give it time to open up and blossom over the next few years. Drink 2018-2026.
