Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo 2019
Composed of Sangiovese with tiny amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino blended in, this is the basic red wine of the estate. It sees 18 months of aging in large barrel. The 1.5 hectare vineyard parcel was re-planted in 2003; the vineyards face east - northeast which produces a long growing season resulting in the complete maturation of the grapes and exceptional balance to this wine which reflects the classic Montevertine style marked by elegance and complexity. Food Pairings: Salami, pasta, grilled meat.
Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Oct 2021: This is a terrific value from the heart of beautiful Tuscany. The Montevertine 2019 Pian del Ciampolo reveals bright lines and a perky or punchy personality with plenty of tart cherry, raspberry and wild plum. The wine offers a naked and transparent interpretation of Sangiovese, and its pretty fruit flavors cede to hints of blue flower and crushed limestone. Winemaking sees cement and a quick 12 months in oak cask. The fruit is sourced from various vineyard sites. Drink: 2021-2029. 93 points.
The 2019 Pian del Ciampolo is per-fumed, aromatic and gracious, as the wines are this year. Floral notes and red berry fruit are beautifully delineated in a classy, mid-weight wine that captures the style and essence of the estate. [90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino] Drink: 2024 – 2034. 92 points.
