Josh Raynolds, Vinous, August 2021: [85% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Vaccarèse, 5% Syrah] Saturated garnet. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red berries, exotic spices and candied flowers, and a vibrant mineral note emerges as the wine opens up. Alluringly sweet and lively on the palate, offering juicy Chambord, cherry and lavender pastille flavors complemented by hints of star anise and white pepper. Smooth and seamless in texture, showing impressive finishing energy, polished tannins and sharp definition. Drink: 2025 – 2035. 94 points.

The Charvins have owned their domaine since 1851. Laurent Charvin represents the sixth generation, but he was the first in the family to estate-bottle the wine, which was previously sold off to négociants. Charvin makes only one red Châteauneuf-du- Pape. Thanks to its fermentation, aging in large concrete vats, and the light-hand in winemaking, this is consistently one of the purest and most perfumed expressions of the appellation... low-yielding and mostly old vines (50 years of age, on average), the wine never lacks depth. Charvin owns just eight hectares in the northwest sector of the appellation. The 2018 is an outstanding wine, showing the approachable character of the vintage to full effect, with abundant red fruit, floral and spice character and supple texture. As pretty as it is right now, it has many years of upward potential, so aging it for a while is advised.

Dark glistening red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, baking spices, garrigue and candied flowers, and a smoky mineral flourish appears as the wine opens up. Sappy, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry and lavender pastille flavors joined by hints of allspice and bitter chocolate. Smooth and seamless in texture, showing superb finishing clarity, gently gripping tannins and strong, spicy persistence. This is a somewhat more brawny wine than usual for Laurent Charvin, but it still retains the domaine's trademark balance and energy.

As to the top wine, I was able to taste the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape from multiple tanks, all rating between 92 and 95 points. All of the wines showed the dark, blue-tinged fruit style that's common in the vintage at this point as well as medium to full body, notable complexity, and a seamless, silky, finesse-oriented style that still carries plenty of density and depth. I suspect it will be a step back from the 2016 and 2017, but it's a beautiful wine in the making that will have plenty of early appeal yet still age gracefully.
